The Tijuca Forest / Rio de janeiro

The Tijuca Forest is one of the four sectors which divides the Tijuca National Park, in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Tijuca Forest is part of Tijuca National Park. With 3.972 hectares, is one of the biggest green areas of the urban world. A large part of its vegetation is of reforestation in substitution to coffee plantations and was performed at the time of Brazil empire.




The Tijuca Forest is an important area of leisure with trails and privileged spaces for the practice of sports, biking, race and mountaineering. It offers squares with toys for children, spaces reserved for BBQ Facilities, family and community confraternizations and restaurants.

What to Do

This time is enough for only a superficial knowledge, in face of the large quantity of attractions available to visitors. Access to some of your points, such as the Pedra da Gávea, takes a whole day (round trip).






Hills with privileged view of the city

  • Pico da Tijuca - With 1022 meters of altitude, is the highest point of the park and the second highest in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. His trail is flagged and not offers great difficulties. It is considered a trail with average degree of difficulty and leads to one of the locations with the most privileged landscapes of the city. 
  • Nozzle of Papagaio - With 989 meters in altitude is one of the most requested trails and practices. Mild and of short duration, and with a beautiful visual 360 degrees to reach aoo summit.The track has a slight inclination in its most, but in the end we have a steep ascent to the summit.

Attention: Do not venture out on the trails without a guide who knows very well the Tijuca Forest. The risk of losing on site is very great

The park has dozens of trails that are more or less demarcated and flagged. Some allow tours without guide while in others the guide is recommended. However, there are no restrictions, because the policing acts only in an informative.The trails are classified by several levels of difficulty, and allow the contact with nature both for children and the elderly, as for adventurers. The Visitors Center of Forest sells maps and guides the cost price.Obedience to the rules of the park is essential for the conservation of forests. Tourists can inform yourself about at the Visitors Center.

It is important that the visitor will help to maintain the ecological harmony of the area and minimize the risk of accidents by observing the rules of behavior in the forest. Do not dispose of waste by the way. Take a bag to store leftovers, bottles and other disposable objects. Observe fences and gates and never deviate from the trails.   • Cova da Onça - This trail leads to many places such as the pond of solitude, woods of eucalyptus, Castles of Taquara and others. It is a long trail and flat in its greater part, ideal for hiking lightweight and calm through the interior of the forest.
