The Serra da Capivara National Park/ Piauí

The Serra da Capivara National Park is a Conservation Unit of Brazilian integral protection to nature located in the municipalities of Piauí Canto de Buriti,Piauã.
The Serra da Capivara National Park is a conservation unit with a wealth of archaeological vestiges that have preserved for millennia. The cultural heritage and the local ecosystems are closely connected, because the conservation of the first depends on the balance of these ecosystems. The balance between the natural resources is the constraint in the conservation of cultural resources and was the that guided the zoning, the management and the use of the park by the public power.
It is a place with several attractions, monumental opened museum, between beautiful rock formations, where are the archaeological sites and paleontological spectacular, which bear witness to the presence of men and prehistoric animals. The national park was created, due in large part to the work of the archaeologist Niéde Guidon, who now heads the Museum of the American Man Foundation, the institution responsible for the management of the park.

The Serra da Capivara National Park is located in the State of Piauã , to the Southeast. It has several archaeological sites.
There are currently 737 archeological sites cataloged where found lythic artifacts, human skeletons, rupestrian paintings with approximately 30,000 color figures, which represent scenes of sex, dance, delivery, among others.



Along 14 trails and 64 archaeological sites open for visitation, we find treasures, as the pieces of ceramics older of the Americas, of 8.960 years. In circuit dos Veadinhos site Blue, we can find four sites with blue paintings, the first of this color discovery in the world.
The Serra da Capivara National Park is located in the field morfoclimático Caatinga, but has many forests of transition of Cerrado in its northern boundary. The vegetation is formed by shrubs weak, but extremely branching, with short branches and hard, with aspects of thorns. The trunk of the trees is smooth, the small leaves and the foliage is lightweight and leaves move light. The herbaceous vegetation usually disappears outside of the rainy season.

The researches carried out in the Parque resulted in record of 33 species of mammals, 24 of bats, 208 species of birds, 19 lizards, 17 snakes and 17 jias and frogs. In the park stands out the Mocó, single endemic of Caatinga mammal. The Greatest Predator of the entire region of the park is the jaguar, which may exceed 50kg and feeds on other vertebrates that can capture.
